Pinkey actually skirts what I think is the most interesting issue about violence influencing violence. (And I should point out that we are talking about representations of violence, here, not actually skirmishing. If someone is punching you in the face it is quite likely that you will perform some kind of violent act in response.)
The thing is, no one wants to admit to having an understanding of these issues. Why do people think that children who watch violent movies will attempt to blow the state of Ohio off the map? Because we don't want to face the fact that those violent feelings exist in our children inherently. We want to believe that it is that cursed television that is at fault or that it was the training from their video games that drove them to do these horrible things. It certainly wasn't our genes and our parenting that produced such a situation. No, no. We just don't understand why someone would do such a thing. Because we are so good that even the thought of violence cannot exist within our wonderful, perfect selves. All that is bad comes from the outside world.
Like from comic strips, for instance.
If it is true that violent media produces monsters, take a look at yourself. In the world of today we cannot help being exposed to this stuff. It's not like it is your fault and we aren't singling anyone out here but we're living in a cesspool (should this bad stuff theory be true) and no mater how you try you're going to get some on yourself. No excuses are necessary, it isn't like we are going to start rating how screwed up people are, but society surrounds us and you are as steeped in it as any otaku.
Now, why should I be scared of the children, who are relatively new at this game and will probably do something simple and direct like deviously planning to shoot people and blow up buildings? You've been out there in this crap for way longer than the young'uns. You're likely to do something more deeply rooted and horrible than any child could possibly imagine. Why, you might not kill me and instead worm social nuances into all aspects of basic survival erasing any possibility of privacy and locking us forever into a race that we cannot even identify.
Uh... I guess I see why Pinkey skirted this one.
